1840 Tithe Survey

In the late 1830’s a survey of the area was made for the purpose of calculating the amount payable to the Manor in place of the tithe.  This survey provides the earliest plan of the area covered by The Plain and gives details of who owned and occupied the land, and its use at that time.  It was published in 1840 but seems to have taken two or three years to compile.  This means some information was out of date by the time it was published.

Plot 253 - house and garden owned by Samuel Leonard and occupied by Abraham Cole

Plot 254 - yard adjoining with schoolroom owned by Samuel Leonard and occupied by Abraham Cole and Dr J William Cross

Plot 255 - house and garden owned by Isaac Roberts and occupied by William Cross

Plot 256 - house and garden owned by Isaac Roberts and void

Plot 257 and 258 -  house and garden owned and occupied by Sarah Hayward

Plot 260 - house, office and garden owned by Susanna Martin and occupied by Thomas Crossman & Edmund Lloyd

Plot 261 - house and garden owned by William Scott and occupied by William Dove

Plot 262 - house and garden owned by John Birt and occupied by Henry Allen

Plot 263 - house and court owned by John Birt and occupied by John George Dyer
